Bedrooms are a space in which to relax and unwind, especially as the temperatures tumble. With the autumn nights drawing in, now is the perfect time to turn your space into a cosy sleep sanctuary.

From keeping the end of your bed warm to bringing the outdoors in, the sleep experts at Sealy UK have revealed the surprising hacks to create a comfortable bedroom — and even improve the quality of your sleep in the process. Take a look at what you can do below…

1. Bring the outdoors in

Bringing the outdoors into your home is an easy way to instantly refresh and transform your space. Whether you go big with a potted tree or adorn your shelves with small succulents, incorporating natural elements from the outside can create a surprisingly cosy country bedroom feel.

“To achieve this, gather some outdoor branches and twigs in a vase or invest in some cane weaved sculptures and then intertwine fairy lights to create the perfect bohemian, cosy-cottage feel,” Alison Jones, sleep expert at Sealy UK, says.

“The combination of darker twigs and dimly-lit fairy lights is a brilliant way to promote relaxation as dim and warm lighting should always be chosen above harsh and bright lighting.”

2. Keep the end of your bed warm

Having trouble sleeping because of cold weather? Chilly outside temperatures can create problems for indoor sleep environments, but a great way to keep toasty is to place hot water bottles at the foot of your bed around 15 minutes before you go to sleep. When the nights draw in, there’s nothing better than sleeping soundly in the warm.

“Feet play a crucial role in regulating the body’s temperature – when they’re covered and toasty, so are we,” adds Alison. “Take advantage of this by investing in some heated accessories and placing them at the end of your bed, to encourage a warm and cosy night’s sleep.”

3. Encourage comfort with Feng Shui

Waking up in a comfortable bedroom can set the tone for your whole day. Embracing Feng Shui is the perfect way to promote a restful environment, while also encouraging a successful night’s sleep.

Not sure how to achieve this? Alison suggests: “Symmetry on both sides of the bed is crucial to the balance of the room as this helps to keep energy levels grounded. You should always ensure the bed can be accessed from both sides, allowing a flow of movement to surround the bed unobstructed, as this will create a positive bedroom energy.”

4. Keep your curtains open on a sunny day

During sunny winter days, open the curtains or blinds on whatever side of the house the sun is shining. While you might think keeping heavy curtains closed will trap in heat, but the sunlight converts to radiant heat when absorbed by the glass. It’s a brilliant way to trap heat naturally as the temperatures tumble.

5. Try the candle trick

“One surprising yet simple hack to get rid of draughts in a bedroom is through the candle trick. To do this, start by closing the bedroom door, and then light a candle to discover where the draught is coming from,” adds Alison.

“Temporarily cover each draught point with tape or a towel, and then use the candle to reveal where the next draught is coming from – look out for windowsills and around radiator pipes. When all the draught points have been found, you can make sure to seal them up sufficiently, creating the perfect warm and snug bedroom environment.”
